Where to Stay

Choosing Your Shanghai Base

Compare four Shanghai bases through the journeys you will actually make.

Start with the journeys you expect to make most often. A hotel is convenient when it works for your plans, not simply because its listing says “central.”

Pick three anchors

Write down your arrival airport, the place you most want to visit and an evening destination. For each candidate hotel, check the full route to these places at a realistic time of day. Note transfers and the walk at both ends, not just the nearest station's name.

Read the property's own directions

Hotel location pages can help you identify an address, entrances and nearby stations. Jing An Shangri-La, for example, publishes a map-and-directions page describing its station connection. Use this as a model for the information to collect, not as a recommendation or proof that every hotel in Jing'an has the same access. Hotel directions example.

Compare like with like

Use the same dates, guest count and cancellation conditions when checking prices. Write down the full amount, room type and whether breakfast is included. A cheaper non-refundable room is a different purchase from a flexible booking.

Make the final choice

For a short stay, prioritise the trips that matter to you and the arrival you can comfortably manage with luggage. Ask about lift access or step-free entry if relevant. Shanghai's official booking guide is a starting point for finding options; verify the actual room terms before paying. Booking guide.

Use four areas as starting points

AreaA useful location question
People's SquareHow do the routes from this exact property connect with your main sightseeing plans?
West Nanjing RoadDoes the entrance suit the station and evening destinations you expect to use?
XintiandiCan you comfortably return from dinner, and is the room arrangement right for your group?
PudongWhich part of Pudong is the property in, and how often will your plans cross the river?

Official property pages give concrete examples: the Marriott Marquis is on Middle Xizang Road, the Sukhothai on Weihai Road, Andaz on Songshan Road and the InterContinental on Zhangyang Road. These are address examples, not a ranking of the hotels or evidence that one district is always cheaper.

Make a choice you can explain

Give each candidate a brief sentence: “This works because my two main visits are straightforward from here,” or “This makes our late arrival easier, although one sightseeing journey is longer.” If your only reason is a broad neighbourhood label, check the map again.

Save the exact listing you compared. Properties with similar English names may be far apart, and a deal can involve a different room or cancellation rule. Before paying, run through the booking checklist; location is only one part of a good reservation.
