A first encounter with Shanghai

Three unhurried days of leafy streets, local food and riverside views, with time to stop and explore.

3 full sightseeing days after arrival. The 5-day plan adds Hongkou and M50.

Review draft · Opening, access and transport conditions still need checking.

For you if

First-time independent visitors who enjoy neighbourhood walks, local food and optional cultural stops. Plan three full days after arrival.

Not the right fit

A packed sightseeing checklist, or a step-free route verified for limited mobility. Shorten each walk to suit your energy.

Planning this route

Where to base yourself

Compare bases near Line 2 around Jing'an Temple, West Nanjing Road or People's Square; Zhongshan Park is another option. This shortlist is about the route, not a promise of lower prices or newer rooms.

About this day

Start after breakfast with comfortable shoes and no fixed number of stops. This is a full sightseeing day, not an arrival-day schedule.

Morning

  1. 1.1

    Wukang Building / Wukang Road

Begin at the corner building, then follow the leafy streets at your own pace.

    Visit

Stay on the public pavement and keep residential entrances clear.

Begin at Jiao Tong University station (Lines 10 and 11) and use a live map for the walk to Wukang Building. Photograph the corner from the pavement, keeping entrances clear, then follow Wukang Road north towards Anfu Road.

Restaurant branches, menus and opening hours still need direct checks; choose an open nearby option.

    Visit details

Confirm any restaurant and exhibition directly.

Explore Wuyuan Road if you feel like a quieter detour; crowd levels vary, especially at weekends.

Choose a nearby cafe or restaurant and take a proper break. Alimentari on Anfu Road and Mignon9 on Wuyuan Road are suggestions from the supplied local itinerary, pending confirmation of the exact branch, opening hours and menu. About this day

This is the busiest of the three days. Choose either a longer museum visit or an early ferry crossing; trying to do both plus a long dinner can undo the relaxed pace.

Morning

  1. 2.1

    Yuyuan Garden / old-town streets

Choose the garden if open, or browse the surrounding old-town streets.

    Visit

Garden, temple and shopping streets have separate tickets and access conditions; check your date.

Check the garden independently; a garden ticket is not a museum or temple booking.

Check the garden's date-specific ticket and closure notice, especially for Mondays and holidays.

    Visit details

If the garden is closed, explore accessible old-town streets or swap this day with Day 1 or 3.

Aim for around 09:00, subject to the garden's opening notice. Reach Yuyuan Garden station on Line 10 or 14 and walk to the garden. Allow about 1-1.5 hours inside if open, then explore the surrounding City God Temple shopping area. The garden, temple and shopping streets are distinct places with different access conditions.

    Meal area

An area suggestion, not a restaurant booking. Confirm the menu, branch and queue before choosing.

    Visit details

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant at 87 Yuyuan Road is an option for xiaolongbao, Shanghai-style soup dumplings. Check the menu and queue before committing; do not assume every service area is inexpensive or quick. Lu Bo Lang is a sit-down alternative from the supplied itinerary, with current menu, price and availability still to confirm. If the area is too busy, eat after moving towards People's Square.

    Connection details

From Yuyuan Garden, take Line 14 to Dashijie and walk to the museum; Line 10 does not run directly to People's Square. Allow roughly 20-35 minutes with walking and station time.

Afternoon

  1. 2.3

    Shanghai Museum / People's Square

    If you have energy

Choose this exhibition visit or an early river crossing; you do not need both.

    Visit

Check the People's Square exhibition and booking notice; do not assume a free permanent-collection visit.

Venue reference point; confirm the entrance in your map.

For the museum, use the official Shanghai Museum mini-program; its current notice also directs overseas visitors to Trip.com. Carry the original valid identity document used to book and confirm the session and ticket price.

The official notice for 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027 says this branch hosts the Americas exhibition only; permanent collections are at the East branch in Pudong. Do not plan this as an automatically free general-collection visit. For the daytime session, the current notice lists last entry at 15:00 and Monday closure except public holidays. Check the official ticket link before going.

    Visit details

On a museum closure day or without suitable tickets, take a short People's Square / People's Park walk and a cafe break in fair weather.

If the current exhibition interests you, allow 1.5-2 hours for Shanghai Museum on People's Square, 201 Ren Min Da Dao.
